A Consultant's AI Talks over Smoked Salmon

As we gathered this Christmas over foie gras, smoked salmon, and clinking glasses of Riesling - the traditional French Xmas dinner - our conversation inevitably drifted to …Chat GPT and GenAI.

Picture me at the festive table,  the strategy consultant, sandwiched between my relatives, all lawyers, judges, and counselors. They're a well-read bunch, seeing AI as little more than the latest buzzword in town, blissfully confident that it couldn't possibly ruffle the feathers of their established professions. I, on the other hand, couldn't help but wear a look of concern...

Here's why:

  • Redefinition of Expertise: Step into the world of strategy and marketing consulting, and you'll find AI grinning at you from every corner.  We hear about an AI tool from the big Consulting cabinet increasingly capable of conducting complex analyses, trend predictions, and even strategy formulation. This raises a crucial question: what value does human expertise add? Or my marketing example is the use of AI in market segmentation, traditionally a cornerstone of marketing consulting, where AI can now identify and target micro-segments in real-time. Remember when market segmentation was our holy grail?

  • Ethical and Trust Concerns: With the explosion of AI-generated content, distinguishing between human-generated and AI-generated insights becomes a gray area. AI can mimic Shakespeare and the analytical prowess of a seasoned marketer. How do we know who's really behind the curtain and what the final objective is? This ambiguity in authorship is turning our industry into a trust tango, where every step forward in technology might be a step back in credibility.

  • The Job Evolution or Displacement:  Automation isn't just a fancy term; it's a reality that's encroaching on our job descriptions. Tasks we thought were exclusively ours are now being eyed by AI. We're not just talking about crunching numbers or drawing up charts – we're talking about AI dabbling in strategic recommendations. It's time for us to juggle our skills and evolve from number-crunchers to strategic maestros.

So, as we step into 2024, it's not just about keeping up with AI; it's about redefining our role in this new rhythm. We in the strategy consulting sphere need to pivot, focusing on areas where real-life experience, ethical judgment, and strategic intuition remain irreplaceable. AI isn't just a trend; it's a tango dance partner. And it's about time we learned some new steps.

I'm eager to hear your thoughts on this AI-led transformation. Let's chat over a virtual Riesling!
